The process of iron sand casting requires the use of sand. The sand mold is used to form the metal parts. After the casting process, the sand mold is removed. This removes the pattern, which leaves a cavity. The internal surfaces may also be formed by cores. These casts can be either large or small. These are made of metal or aluminum. Its manufacturing process varies depending on the type of metal required.

The process of iron sand casting involves pouring molten metal into a mold cavity. This mold contains many cavities, or risers. To help reduce the shrinkage during solidification, each riser is open. The first material that enters the mold cavity passes through an opening in the riser. The mold is then closed, leaving a cavity for the molten metal. When the iron cools, it is released through the broken sand shell.

After filling the mold cavity, the sand mold is placed into a box for the molten metal to flow in. The molten metal is usually iron, steel, bronze, brass, magnesium, or aluminium alloys. In some cases, other materials may be used, such as lead, tin, or zinc. The molten metal is still glowing red and weighs more than the casting sand, resulting in the casting floating and cracking the mold.
