The mechanical properties of steel are determined by the process used to create a casting. In addition to the material's hardness and ductility, the material must also meet its specific requirements for strength and elasticity. These requirements are dictated by the thickness and size of the casting. Some grades are limited in their maximum sizes, while others are able to accommodate the most complex shapes.  

A steel casting can vary in size and shape, weighing just a few grams to dozens or hundreds of tons. The mechanical properties of steel castings make them ideal for a wide range of applications, and the material used is typically of superior quality. High-alloy steel, for example, is useful for special applications. Pressure vessel castings can be designed to withstand high tensile stress and dynamic load. Large steel castings should be made to withstand high temperatures and a high degree of corrosion.
