An air tight flange casting is an integral part of any air-tight gasket system. The manufacturing process starts with a soft face, which is embedded into a phonographic spiral groove. This groove is composed of evenly spaced serrations and is formed by 90-degree tooling. Once the phonographic spiral groove is in place, the final ring-type joint is tightened using a wrench or impact.

A high-quality gasket should have a smooth surface finish to prevent leaks. The surface finish of a flange plays an important role in the service life of a gasket. A smooth surface finish will not provide the necessary friction between mating surfaces. Hence, a nonmetallic gasket has a higher chance of flange creep under load. Its creep will compromise the bolted joint's tightness.
